JOSE AQUILES

A native of Santiago de Cuba, singer - songwriter José Aquiles is one of today's foremost representatives of the Nueva Trova movement that emerged in the Caribbean island in the second half of the twentieth century. Nueva Trova is often said to have been a movement inspired by the trovadores, the wandering troubadors of 19th century Cuba (Trova Tradicional Cubana), as well as the Feeling song movement, but often is also influenced by rock, pop, and Tropicália.

José, who has had a musical career that spans nearly 40 years, is a prolific and acclaimed songwriter who has also composed for 

theater, ballet, TV and film. Through his work - for which he has won the prestigious CubaDisco and Adolfo Guzmán awards - he honors the musical traditions of Santiago de Cuba.
